Q1) What is UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)?

A.1) UPSC holds a combined examination for civil services (for recruitment to IAS, IPS, IFS and other services - Group A and Group B) is held once in a year in two parts : Preliminary and Main Examinations (include written test and personality test). In Maharashtra it is held at Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad. The notification for the same is published in the third week of December or first week of January every year in Employment News / Rozgar Samachar.

Q2) What are the services offered by UPSC through the civil services examination?

A.1) 1. Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 2. Indian Foreign Service (IFS), 3. Indian Police Service (IPS), Also Other Services (Group A and B) : 4. Indian P & T Accounts & Finance Service, 5. Indian Audit & Accounts Service, 6. Indian Customs & Central Excise Service, 7. Indian Defence Accounts Service, 8. Indian Revenue Service, 9. Indian Ordinance Factory Service (Assistant Manager, Nontechnical), 10. Indian Postal Service, 11. Indian Civil Accounts Service, 12. Indian Railway Traffic Service, 13. Q3) What is the structure for UPSC - Prelims Examination?

A.3) Subparts of General Studies for Preliminary Examination 1) General Science, 2) Current Events (National), 3) Current Events (International),  4) History of India and Indian National Movement, 5) Indian and World Geography,  6) Indian Polity and Economy, 7) Mental Ability Tests. Paper 1 : 2 Hours, General Studies, 150 questions, 150 marks. and Paper 2 : 2 Hours, Optional Subject, 120 questions, 300 marks. Q4) What is the structure of UPSC Mains Examination?

A.4) Sructure of the Main Examination : Subparts : 1) General Science, 2) Current Events (National), 3) Current Events (International), 4) Indian History, 5) Indian and World Geography, 6) Indian Polity, 7) Economy, 8) Mental Ability Tests. Qualifying Papers : Paper 1 : One of the Indian languages : 300 marks and Paper 2 : English : 300 marks. These papers are of a qualifying nature only. Marks obtained in them are not count for ranking purposes. Compulsory Subjects : Paper 3 : Essay 200 marks, Paper 4 & 5 : General Studies (Papers I and II) each : 300 marks, Optional Subjects (2 Subjects) : Papers 6 & 7 First Optional Subject (Papers I & II) each : 300 marks, Papers 8 & 9 Second Optional Subject (Papers I & II) each : 300 marks : Grand Total (of written exam Papers 3 to 9) 2000 marks. Q6) Who can appear for UPSC Exams?

A.6) Age : 21 to 30 years for open catagory (4 attempts), separate ceiling for SC/ST and OBC, Qualification : degree from any Indian University.
