What is PSI (Police Sub-Inspector) and STI (Sales Tax Inspector)?
PSI means Police Sub-Inspector, STI means Sales Tax Inspector, Asst. means Mantralaya Assistant. This exam is conducted by MPSC. Notifications for vacant posts are published by the Commission from time to time.
Many students wrongly take MPSC State Civil Services Exams and these exams to be same, as both are conducted by MPSC i.e. Maharashtra Public Service Commission. There have even been case where students have taken admission to the wrong course.
The syllabus also differs for both. To mention a few examples, Arithmetic is a subject only for PSI-STI-Asst. exam and not for MPSC Civil Service Exams. There, Mental Ability tests are included in the CSAT paper. Science as a subject also differs for PSI-STI-Asst. Marathi and English languages, their expected importance level and weightage also differs.
Age limit, number of attempts and nature of examination :
Eligibility condition for Main exam is 19 years complete and graduate of any discipline. One can also appear for the Prelim exam even while doing the last year of graduation course. But it is necessary to have received a degree before the Main exam. Maximum age limit for STI, Asst. is 33 years (for reserved category candidates it is 38 years) and for PSI it is 28 years (for reserved category candidates it is 31 years). There is no limit for total number of attempts. Prelim exam, Main exam and Interview are the three stages of examination.
Students should not get confused only by the fact that both the exams are conducted by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission. They must collect proper, authentic information regarding both and then make their decision. Sales Tax Inspectors are selected through PSI-STI-Asst. exams, while Sales Tax Commissioners (Group A and B) are selected through State Civil Service Exams. Also, Mantralaya Assistants are selected through PSI-STI-Asst. exams, while Mantralaya Section Officers are selected through State Civil Service Exams. Similarly, in Police services, Police SubInspectors are selected through PSI-STI-Asst. exams whereas Deputy Superintendents of Police are selected through State Civil Service Exams. In short, Civil Service Exam is an exam for selecting officers for higher posts and PSI-STI-Asst. is an exam for selection of officers who work under their seniority. Citizens come in contact with the police department in day-to-day life even at the rural level. But they do not know details like which officer is at a higher post or the exact names of their posts, etc. Hence, a heirarchy of officers in the Police service is given next page.
